Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, a fess dancette to chief, wavy to base, Or. Attached below and to the sides of the shield terminating above the dancette, a Gold scroll inscribed "SI VIS PACEM" on the dexter segment and "PARA BELLUM" on the sinister segment in Black.

Symbolism
The shield is blue for Infantry. The dancette partition line represents the mountainous character of the State of Idaho from which state the personnel of the regiment were originally drawn. The wavy partition line represents Snake River, which runs across the southern and western portions of the state.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 414th Infantry Regiment, Organized Reserves on 7 January 1931. It was redesignated for the 414th Regiment, Army Reserve on 5 August 1960. The insignia was amended to correct the punctuation in the motto and revise the symbolism on 3 April 1970.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Army Reserve: On a wreath of the colors Or and Azure the Lexington Minute Man Proper. The statue of the Minute Man, Captain John Parker (H.H. Kitson, sculptor) stands on the Common in Lexington, Massachusetts.
